Fragments of a Commute:
Lost in Transition

To reveal the disconnect problem through fragmented memories,
leaving viewers with a cliffhanger.

Engulfed in tasks,
drowned by the mundane.
The city rushes past,
lost in OBLIVION.

Steps are taken,
but the journey fades.
Moments scatter like dust—
unseen, unheld, unremembered.

Home is reached,
yet the path is a void.
A commute,
disjointed, disconnected, lost.

Have you ever started a journey,
reached your destination,
but couldn't remember how you got there?

The city felt like a blur,
lost in OBLIVIAN,
and the experience was disconnected,
as if the journey never really happened.

Problem Statement for Oblivion

In today's technologically driven world, our relationship with urban environments has drastically changed. Modern commutes have become monotonous and disconnected, defined by passive interactions with the city. Once moments of observation and exploration, commutes are now dominated by screens, reshaping attentional habits and muscle memory. Gaze patterns, once directed outward toward the environment, now predominantly focus downward, reducing the city to a mere backdrop. This detachment diminishes meaningful engagement with urban spaces, eroding their historical, cultural, and emotional significance.

"An observational study on the disconnect between people and the city, exploring gaze patterns, physical interactions, and the relationship between time, location, and activity during urban commutes."

"The ways our bodies move during commutes reflect habits shaped by technology, limiting physical engagement with the city."

1. BODY PATTERN

Modern commutes reveal how technology has reshaped physical behaviors. Once fluid and responsive to the environment, body patterns now reflect routine and detachment, with individuals walking with heads down or minimally interacting with their surroundings. This shift highlights how urban engagement has become increasingly passive and disconnected.

"Commutes fostered outward gaze and exploration, but screens have shifted focus downward, reshaping attentional habits and reducing engagement with the environment."

2. GAZE

In the past, commutes were opportunities for observation and exploration, with gaze patterns naturally directed outward toward the environment. This outward focus encouraged a dynamic relationship with urban spaces, fostering awareness and connection. Over time, however, the proliferation of screens has reshaped attentional habits and muscle memory. Today, gaze patterns are predominantly downward, fixed on devices, which has significantly diminished meaningful engagement with the surrounding environment and blurred our connection with the city.

GAZE TRACKER - Mapping and Shaping Attention during OBLIVIAN

"In the past, looking around was instinctive, while in the present, a downward gaze has become the default."

3. TIME

The contrast between the old and new city highlights a significant shift in default commuting behaviors. In the past, people's natural actions during commutes involved looking around, straight ahead, or upward, engaging with their surroundings and making visionary connections with the environment. These behaviors were instinctive, fostering an active relationship with the urban context. In the present, the default action has shifted to looking downward, regardless of whether a device is in hand. This change reflects how technology and habitual screen use have reprogrammed attentional habits, altering the innate ways people interact with their urban environments over time.

"Location and context hold the power to shape activity, gaze, and body patterns, influencing how people engage and interact with the city."

4. LOCATION

The power of a location lies in its ability to shape human activity and interaction by influencing where and how people direct their gaze. On streets, individuals often look down at devices, disengaged from their surroundings. In contrast, locations like Times Square or public plazas actively invite people to look up and around, offering opportunities to discover, interact, and engage with the environment. A campus fosters quiet observation and focus, while public seating encourages social interaction or moments of rest. These differences highlight the strong relationship between place and behavior, proving that location holds the power to create and enhance opportunities for engagement and discovery.

"Activity transforms commutes into personal journeys, creating unique relationships between people and the city."

5. ACTIVITY

Activity is a pivotal factor that can transform a person's journey from an Oblivion to an Odyssey. Even within the same location and time, activity becomes a deeply personal experience, shaping how individuals interact with the city and develop a unique relationship with it. Activities can vary widely: something a person plans to do, something spontaneous sparked by what they encounter, an opportunity intentionally offered by the city, or something they actively seek and enjoy. These diverse permutations make activity a user-centric element, turning the journey into a meaningful exploration and fostering a personal connection with the urban environment.

CONCLUSION FROM THE STUDY - OBLIVIAN

The exploration of body patterns, gaze, and time highlights how modern commuting behaviors have transformed our relationship with urban environments. Technology has reshaped physical habits, with body patterns reflecting detachment and routine, while gaze has shifted from outward exploration to a default downward focus. Similarly, time, which once fostered instinctive engagement with surroundings, is now compressed and hurried, leaving little space for meaningful connections. These shifts reveal the growing disconnection between people and the city.

Location and activity, however, offer pathways to reclaim this lost engagement. Location holds the power to shape interactions, encouraging discovery and connection, while activity remains a deeply personal factor that transforms commutes into unique journeys. Whether planned, spontaneous, or city-driven, activities allow individuals to build relationships with their surroundings, turning mundane routines into opportunities for exploration. Together, these factors present the potential to reconnect individuals with urban environments, transforming disconnected commutes into meaningful urban experiences.

"The Intersection, Interaction, Interplay of body patterns, gaze, time, location, and activity defines urban engagement, creating opportunities to reimagine and transform our journeys."
